Movies of 2019

Here are a few of the movies that look interesting this year. I pulled my list from a website called firstshowing.net. I would encourage you to follow this link for a full list of the movies scheduled for 2019.

Wow what a list... I had no idea some of these movies were coming out. My most anticipated of this list are Captain Marvel (March), Marvel's Avengers: Endgame (April). Spider-Man: Far From Home (July), and of course Star Wars: Episode IX (December). Disney has a lot of movies coming out this year not just there Marvel and Star Wars movies. Pixar's Toy Story 4  has to be a must-see.

The Maze Runner

"Get out. Or die trying"

This is the newest in the line of post apocalyptic novels to be made into a big Hollywood blockbuster. The Maze Runner made it to #1 on the New York Times best seller list in 2009. Like the others in this genre, this story pits the protagonists against a situation with almost no hope of survival or escape. Can the group survive in the Glades long enough to find a way out of the maze? They only have a small time frame to explore the maze each day and it changes. At night, the grievers come out and no one has survived a night in the maze.

The thing that looks most interesting is that The Maze Runner really seems to have a game aspect to the challenge. To survive you must run and find a way out. This movie reminds me a little of Logan's Run (1976) or The Running Man (1987). The other aspect of this movie that has my attention is their society and survival in the Glades. They have organized themselves into a society in order to produce food and survive until they can find a way out. The antagonism between staying and surviving verses running and escaping could play well in this story.

I am expecting high action sequences and big special effects. The critics are not giving this movie a lot of love, but we will have to see how the fans react. Is there room for one more series about teens trying to survive in a world that is out to kill them? I guess only time and the box office will tell.

WHO is Coming!

Tonight starts the brand new season of Dr. Who on BBC and BBC America. The show has just celebrated 50 years and has really gained speed and popularity in the last few years. The show has always been popular in Great Britain and a solid following in America. The show is also gaining a stronger presence in the rest of the world.

The show is fun with a different adventure each week. The Doctor has at his disposal all of time and space as destinations. The writers have a lot of freedom since they can draw from everywhere and anywhere for story ideas.

The Doctor has just gone through a regeneration, which is the shows way of working in another leading actor and allow the story to stay the same. The companion will stay the same, but the Doctor will change. Matt Smith has stepped down and Peter Capaldi will be picking up the mantle. So, this is a good time to try Dr. Who if you have not been watching.

If you have never watch an episode, what do you need to know?

  1. The "Doctor" is an alien and a traveler through time and space. He is a Time Lord and one of the last of his kind. He is very old and has all those years of experience to draw from in every adventure.
  2. He travels with others (mainly earthlings) that are called his companions. He has a strong fondness for these companions and has to save them often.
  3. He travels in a ship that is called the T.A.R.D.I.S. (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space) The Tardis does not always go where they are planning, but it always takes them where they are needed.
  4. Every regeneration of the Doctor brings a new interpretation of the character. So, with his arrival, everyone is getting to know this new Doctor.
How to start as a newbie:
  1. Use the rule of three. Try out at least the first three episodes and see what you think.
  2. Don't feel like you have to catch up on all the information of the Whoverse. They do a great job of revealing what you need to know when you need to know it.
  3. If you still like the show, go back and start watching the reboot which began in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston.
